The certificate you take home at the wedding is a keepsake, not the official document you'll need for a visa, a passport or a name change. Here's how your marriage is registered, how to get the official certificate, and what it costs.
Two certificates, and only one is official
This trips up almost everyone, so let's be clear. After a wedding in Australia there are two different documents called a "marriage certificate":
Ceremonial certificate
The decorative certificate you sign at the ceremony and take home. It's a lovely memento — but it is not accepted as legal proof of your marriage.
Official standard certificate
The formal certificate issued by the state registry after your marriage is registered. This is the one Home Affairs, Passports, banks and Births, Deaths & Marriages will ask for.
If anyone ever needs to prove you're married — a visa application, changing your surname, updating official records — it's the official standard certificate they want, not the keepsake from the day.
How your marriage gets registered
You don't have to lodge anything yourself — your celebrant does it. After the ceremony, I submit the signed paperwork to the NSW Registry of Births, Deaths & Marriages, and the registry records your marriage. In NSW this registration must happen within up to 14 days of the wedding.
You are legally married from the moment of the ceremony — registration doesn't change that. What registration does is create the official record the registry can then issue a certificate from.
How to apply for the official certificate
Once your marriage is registered, you (or your celebrant, at the time of registering) can order the official certificate from NSW Births, Deaths & Marriages. There are three ways to apply:
- Online — the fastest option, through the NSW Registry.
- By post, or
- In person at a Service NSW centre.
What it costs and how long it takes
As at September 2026, a NSW standard marriage certificate is $70, or $105 for the priority service (prices include postage). Standard processing online is up to about three weeks; priority is faster — plus a few days for delivery. Fees and timeframes are set by the registry and change from time to time, so check the current figure before you apply.
When you'll actually need it
Plenty of couples never rush for the official certificate — until they do. The common triggers:
- A partner or spouse visa — the Department of Home Affairs asks for the official certificate as evidence of the marriage.
- Changing your surname on a passport, licence, bank accounts or Medicare.
- Overseas recognition — using your Australian marriage abroad.

Already had a ceremony overseas?
If you were legally married in another country, you generally don't register that marriage in Australia and there's no Australian certificate for it — your overseas certificate is your proof. Whether you also need to do anything here depends on your plans; start with when an overseas marriage is recognised in Australia.
