Legals-Only Weddings · Sydney
Married in Fifteen Minutes, Anywhere You Like
No aisle, no seating chart, no fuss — just the two of you, two witnesses, and everything the law requires. A legals-only wedding is the simplest way to be married in Sydney, and it doesn't have to happen in a registry office.
What it is: a short ceremony containing only the legal essentials of an Australian marriage — the celebrant's legal statement, your legal vows, and the signing. Around 10–15 minutes, at your home, a park, a café, or my garden venue in Bella Vista. $495–$595 all-inclusive, evenings and weekends welcome. You're exactly as married as anyone who spent $36,000.
Only Three Things Make a Marriage Legal
Everything else at a wedding is tradition. These are the parts the Marriage Act 1961 actually requires — and they're all a legals-only ceremony contains.
The monitum
A short legal statement I'm required to say as your authorised celebrant, explaining the nature of marriage under Australian law. About thirty seconds — solemn, simple, and the moment it all becomes real.
Your legal vows
One required sentence each, spoken to each other in front of your witnesses. You can add personal words around it if you like — the legal sentence is the only must.
The signing
You, your two witnesses (anyone aged 18+), and I sign the marriage documents. You receive a ceremonial certificate on the day, and I register your marriage online with NSW Births, Deaths & Marriages so the official certificate is available quickly.
The one piece of lead time: like every marriage in Australia, a Notice of Intended Marriage (NOIM) must be lodged at least one calendar month before the ceremony — and it stays valid for 18 months, so lodging early costs you nothing. If your situation is genuinely urgent, ask me about a shortening of time; I'll tell you honestly whether your circumstances are likely to qualify.
If you are working to a visa deadline, that month matters more than anything else on this page — there is more on timing and which certificate you actually need here.
Legals-Only vs the Registry Office
Both are fully legal. The difference is where, when, and how it feels.

Where Couples Do Their Legals
An authorised celebrant can marry you almost anywhere. These are the favourites.
Your home
Slippers optional. The living room, the balcony, the backyard — some of the warmest ceremonies I've done happened next to someone's kitchen.
The Garden Sanctuary, Bella Vista
My own photogenic garden venue in the Hills District — a ready-made setting if your place doesn't feel right and a park feels too public. See the garden.
A park or beach
A quiet corner of a botanic garden, a headland lookout, your favourite picnic spot. Small legals-only groups rarely need permits — I'll flag it if your spot does.
A café or restaurant
Sign the papers, then go straight to breakfast. Marrying where you had your first date is more common — and better — than you'd think.
Most of these happen close to home for me — across Western Sydney, from The Hills through to Blacktown and Seven Hills, with no travel surcharge and no premium for an early morning or an evening.
Simple Doesn't Have to Mean Clinical
The legal minimum is a floor, not a ceiling. Most couples add one or two small touches — a favourite reading, a ring exchange, a sentence or two of personal vows before the legal ones, or a toast the moment the signing's done. It keeps the ceremony short and easy while making it feel like yours rather than an appointment.
And if you want none of that — genuinely just the legals — that's a perfectly good choice too, and you won't get a sales pitch from me about upgrading.
Searching for "court marriage"? If that's the term you or your family use, you're in the right place — a legals-only ceremony is Australia's equivalent. I've written a full guide comparing the two processes, including certificates for use in India: Court Marriage in Sydney, explained.
On a Visa Timeline? Start With the Paperwork
A lot of the couples I marry are studying here or working on a temporary visa — often on a student budget, watching every dollar — and a legals-only ceremony is usually the right fit: it's the most affordable way to be properly married under Australian law, and I don't charge a premium for an early morning, an evening or a weekend when that's the only window your classes and shifts leave free.
If any kind of visa deadline is in play, two things matter more than anything else on this page. Neither is complicated, but both are far easier a month early than a week late.
- The one-month rule. A Notice of Intended Marriage must be lodged with your celebrant at least one calendar month before the ceremony, and it stays valid for 18 months — so lodging early costs you nothing. Start the paperwork before you fix the date; I can lodge your NOIM long before anything else is decided.
- The right certificate. The certificate presented on the day is a ceremonial keepsake. The official marriage certificate — the one a visa application or any government department generally needs — is issued by NSW Births, Deaths & Marriages after I register your marriage, and is ordered separately. I register online so it's available as quickly as possible.
To be clear about where my expertise ends: I'm a marriage celebrant, not a registered migration agent. I can tell you how and when your marriage is registered and which certificate is which — but not advise on visa eligibility or applications. For that, speak to a MARA-registered agent. There's more on timing and certificates for couples around Blacktown, and a dedicated guide for Nepali couples and Afghan and Muslim couples.
Legals Now, Celebration Later
Locking in the legal side today doesn't close the door on a real wedding — it opens it. Once you're married, a future celebration has no legal requirements at all: full rituals, any language, any scale, whenever you're ready. Many of my couples come back a year later for exactly that.
